What you see depends on where you stand

It may be tempting to be aggressive in conflict. Perhaps with hopes that getting in an adversary’s face will achieve your preferred conflict outcome.

In the podcast, Conflict Owners Manual, I suggest other approaches that are more likely to get the result you want.

The appeal of these approaches are that they’re simple, fast, effective, fun, and everyone learns a conflict competency.

For example:

While a disagreement unspools around you, take a greeting card, playing card, credit card, grocery receipt, book, or anything that has a front and a back that’s different from the front.

Hold the item between the disagreeing parties and ask each in turn to describe what they see.

A simple demonstration can show that the conflict is because they see the same thing from different points of view.

What happens next? They each see a different picture of the same piece of paper. That’s their viewpoint.

Demonstrating differences in point of view is a conflict competence that’s transferrable to almost any conflict. To see the results of my demonstration, follow the links below to my YouTube channel or to your preferred podcast app.

Your perspective depends on your viewpoint. Your viewpoint depends on what you see from where you stand.
